What's Your Moon Phase Personality?

You may have seen me talk about the moon phases and how they are good for specific actions, or how the zodiac signs flavor how the moon feels each day, like a Moon in Aries is impulsive, but a Moon in Libra wants beauty and peace. But did you know that you can also get some insight into your personality by looking at which moon phase you were born under? Yep, that's right! At the time of your birth, the moon was in a specific phase and that phase can say a lot about who you are as a person.

The EIght Moon Phases

The lunar cycle consists of eight moon phase, with each moon phase lasting approximately 2½ days. So the moon moves through the phases pretty quickly.

The eight moon phases are:

• New Moon
• Waxing Crescent Moon
• First Quarter Moon
• Waxing Gibbous Moon
• Full Moon
• Waning Gibbous Moon
• Last Quarter Moon
• Waning Crescent Moon

But how do you know which phase you were born under? You can get a rough idea if you know your Moon and Sun signs.

You can look up your Moon and Sun signs by pulling up your free birth chart on astro.com

Once you fill out your information (name, date of birth, location of birth, time of birth) you will be shown your birth chart. I know the birth chart can be overwhelming, so I've included a free worksheet you can download below to help you take a look at just the information you need so it's not so much to look at all at once.

When you have your birth chart from astro.com, look for your moon and sun. The moon is represented by a crescent moon and the sun is represented by a circle with a dot inside of it. You'll want to look up those symbols and see which sign they are in and write them down on your worksheet.

In the sample chart below, you'll see two purple arrows pointing to the two places you can find the information for the Sun (the circle with the dot in the middle). I find the reference box (the left arrow) to be quicker to read as next to the Sun, it says 15 Gem 49'14". That tells you that the Sun for this chart is in Gemini.

You'll also see in the chart below in the reference box that the Moon is just below the Sun. And it says 1 Aqu 32'17", so the Moon in this chart is in Aquarius. So we now know that the Sun here is in Gemini and the Moon is in Aquarius.

Now that you know how many signs away your Moon is away from your Sun, simply use the list below to find which moon phase you were born under. For example, above with the Sun in Gemini and the Moon in Aquarius, that Moon is five signs away from the Sun, which means that the moon phase was the First Quarter Moon.

New Moon the Moon is in the same or the second sign from the Sun

Waxing Crescent Moon the Moon is three signs from the Sun

First Quarter Moon the Moon is four or five signs from the Sun

Waxing Gibbous Moon the Moon is six signs from the Sun

Full Moon the Moon is seven or eight signs from the Sun

Waning Gibbous Moon the Moon is nine signs from the Sun

Last Quarter Moon the Moon is 10 or 11 signs from the Sun

Waning Crescent Moon the Moon is 12 signs from the Sun

Meaning of the Phases

Now that you know which phase you were born under, let's take a look at what each phase means in terms of your personality.

New Moon

The New Moon is the first phase, the beginning of a new cycle. Folks born under this phase tend to be more spontaneous and plunge headfirst into new projects and ideas. They are energetic and lively and love to start new things. These people can be impulsive and often rely on their gut instincts to lead them.

Waxing Crescent Moon

This is the phase of activation. There is still a lot of energy here, much like with the New Moon phase, but it now has more focus. Folks born under a Waxing Crescent Moon phase can struggle with releasing the past, and they tend to stick to their habits and routines. These people need to learn to move forward in their lives and to take action on their ideas.

First Quarter Moon

This phase is all about action. People born under the First Quarter Moon carry a little nervous energy with them, because of the need to take risks with action. People born under this phase tend to be confident and independent, and rise to any challenge that life presents. They are very determined and need to find ways to channel their anger.

Waxing Gibbous Moon

This phase is about self-expression and folks born under the Waxing Gibbous Moon tend to gravitate towards planning and a bit of perfectionism. They are very self-aware and creative, and are constantly analyzing their surroundings. They question everything and are very introspective and have the drive to excel at their craft.

Full Moon

The Full Moon is about fulfillment. Individuals born under this phase look for meaning in all things and crave a full, fulfilling life. They generally seek fulfillment through a significant other as relationships are highly important to them. These folks are idealists.

Waning Gibbous Moon

This phase is about sharing what you have learned. It is the phase of giving back. Folks born under this phase may be teachers or somehow like to share and communicate what they have learned through writing or research. If they have no message to share they can become despondent.

Last Quarter Moon

The Last Quarter Moon is about dramatic shifts and moving away from the old. Individuals born under this phase may find they are constantly readjusting and reevaluating their values and beliefs. It is hard for people born at this time to relate to life in the here and now. They often appear to be living in a world of their own, when in actuality they are going through an internal process of reorientation.

Waning Crescent Moon

This phase is about completion and closure. These folks tend to be very reflective and prefer their alone time. They are very spiritual and seek to understand the big questions in life and may be very intuitive or psychic. Their lesson is to distill what they have learned from situations into wisdom to share with others.
